Unmanned Systems Canada , The Canadian Interoperability Technology Interest Group , The Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance , and The Collaborative Centre for Justice and Safety at The University of Regina are extremely pleased to announce Canada’s first ever National Public Safety and Emergency Management Operational Unmanned Air Systems Workshop.
The use of Unmanned Air Systems (UAS) in public safety and emergency management in Canada has been increasing over the past decade. Unmanned Systems Canada has been representing the interests of the unmanned vehicle systems community since 2003.
The Canadian Interoperability Technology Interest Group (CITIG), a not-for-profit organization operated by the Canadian Associations of Chiefs of Police, Fire and Paramedics, has supported efforts to increase awareness and use of this important new capability.
At CITIG’s Eighth National Workshop held in Ottawa in December 2014, a group of UAS experts recommended that key stakeholders join to hold an operationally focused workshop designed to identify gaps in policy, training and operations and to develop action plans to fill those gaps.
The resulting Workshop is being held at the University of Regina on Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11, 2015. Organizers are holding a Technology Demonstration Day on Tuesday, June 9, 2015. The focus of the Technology Demonstration Day would be to showcase both the operational use of UAS AND how these systems could potentially leverage the new Canadian Public Safety 700 MHz Broadband Network currently being developed in Canada.
The Workshop’s goals are:
• Develop an understanding of the current state of public safety and emergency management UAS use and capabilities in Canada;
• Identify the desired future state, categorize potential barriers to change, iterate the “case for change;” and, as a result,
• Develop a first draft of a Canadian Public Safety & Emergency Management UAS Strategy.
We look forward to seeing you in Regina!
