Canadian UAV Training – Self Study Options

We recently posted a list of UAV training providers in Canada, however some people may not be able to visit these locations or are looking for  self study options…

The first place to start is with the Transport Canada Knowledge Requirements, these outline what TC expects UAV pilots to know, and should be used as a general guide.

This document provides topics and sample objectives in the cognitive domain. The sample objectives provided are not a complete list of objectives – their purpose is to illustrate the depth of knowledge expected in the subject areas.

As outlined in the TC document, the following are additional recommended study materials:

Many of these publications can be found on the Nav Canada website.

A study guide for the Restricted Operator Certificate – Aeronautical (ROC-A) can be found on Industry Canada’s website.

D225004-BIn addition to these government resources, probably the best and only third party publication that covers the required material is – UNMANNED: TEXTBOOK FOR UAS STUDIES

A fascinating sector is emerging in the world of aviation. Unmanned aircraftsystems (UAS) are re--defining aerial activities, and broadening the definitionof what it means to be a pilot. Unmanned: Textbook for UAS Studies, shares thatemerging world with its readers.

Now, at the dawn of a new sector in theaviation world – a dawn that is enlightening industry advances in Unmannedaircraft developments – Aviation Publishers presents this new title, to educatethose who will fly these fascinating technologically--advanced aerial machines, for commercial applications. Large and small, heavy and light, the UAS is anamazing new breed of aircraft. Its world is broad, and its pace of development is rapid.

Subjects in Unmanned include: Evolution of UAS, Regulations& Authorities, UAS Classification, Command & Control, Situational Awareness, Types of UAS Operations, Payloads, Special Flight Operating Certificates, and Rotary Wing UAS. Based on its parental publication, From the Ground Up from which it shares content, Unmanned also delves into subjects that UAS operators must know to fly the systems that are their responsibility. These subjects include: Theory of Flight, Aerodromes & Airspace, Aviation Weather,Air Navigation, and Radio. Unmanned concludes with a comprehensive list of explanations, spanning several pages, of International Abbreviations &Terminology used in the UAS field.

Aviation Publishers has teamed with the Canadian Centre for Unmanned Vehicle Systems (CCUVS) to create this new title, Unmanned. The CCUVS exists to facilitate sustained, profitable growth in the Unmanned systems sector. They represent academia, industry and government;they work in air, ground and maritime Unmanned systems environments. Their activities and services include: Unmanned systems standards work, research assistance, applications and technology solutions development, training, provision of facilities, publishing of industry studies, consultancy, promotion of civil and commercial use of Unmanned systems, and stimulating economic grow thin the UAS industry.

CCUVS has, as its objectives, the motivation to develop standards for Unmanned aircraft systems. Furthermore, they seek to expand the knowledge base of UAS, promote expansion and innovation throughout the industry, promote sector cooperation and growth, and optimize the technology to facilitate UAS integration into world markets.

A review of the book can be found on DIY Drones.

At this time there is no official or certified training programs or exams, the onus falls to the operator to ensure they understands the ins and outs of safe UAV operation in Canadian airspace. Take the time to research and learn, and always keep this process going.
